- A year-round resident to most of the United States
- Summer colors for males are primarily yellow through the body with black top of head and wings; in winter males are more yellowish brown through the body. Females are grayish brown year round with dark brown wings and white wing bars
- Habitat includes yards and other open areas dotted with shrubs and trees
- Herbivore and insectivore, eating seeds, berries, and insects
