- Shell length measures 4-8 inches long
- Range is throughout much of the United States, depending on subspecies
- The upper shell (carapace) is darkish in color with red or yellow splotches on edge of shell. Legs have yellow striping.
- Habitat includes aquatic areas with muddy bottoms and vegetation
- Can live in suburban areas where wetlands occur
- Omnivore, eating plant material and insects
