  • Shell length measures 4-8 inches long
  • Range is throughout much of the United States, depending on subspecies
  • The upper shell (carapace) is darkish in color with red or yellow splotches on edge of shell. Legs have yellow striping.
  • Habitat includes aquatic areas with muddy bottoms and vegetation
  • Can live in suburban areas where wetlands occur
  • Omnivore, eating plant material and insects
