- Measures 18-28 inches long
- Range is throughout most of the United States
- Body is typically darkish in color with 3 yellowish stripes running the length of the body
- Habitat includes open grassy areas, especially areas that are near water
- Common snake in suburban, but not urban, areas
- Carnivore, eating insects, frogs, toads, salamanders, tadpoles, and fish
